Trademark Registration Cost in Kazakhstan 2026

Every client’s first question is the same: “How much does it cost?” The question is simple, but the cost of registering a trademark in Kazakhstan is made up of several payments that even experienced business owners mix up. Some think they only pay the lawyer. Others budget with figures from the internet that are two or three years old and ignore the new fees and the 16% VAT.
Below is a calculation based on the current KAZPATENT fee schedule, in force from 1 January 2026, including 16% VAT.
The 30-second summary
Registering a trademark involves two kinds of payments: fees to KAZPATENT, the National Institute of Intellectual Property (examination when you file, and registration with issue of the certificate after a positive decision), and the lawyer’s fee for handling the case. For a small or medium-sized business (SME), the KAZPATENT fees under the standard procedure are KZT 126,209.02 for an application covering up to 3 Nice classes with up to 10 items in each; for a company that is not an SME, KZT 155,662.14. Expedited examination costs KZT 797,500 for all applicants, and the certificate is paid for separately.

What the cost is made up of
KAZPATENT fees. They are often called a state duty, but legally they are payments for the services of the expert organisation: KAZPATENT sets the prices in agreement with the Ministry of Justice (Article 3-1(2) of the Kazakhstan Trademark Law). The amount depends on the applicant category and the number of classes and items, not on who handles the application.
Lawyer’s or patent attorney’s fee: a search before filing, choosing classes and drafting the list of goods and services, preparing the application, answering the examiner, and contesting a provisional refusal. This is a separate payment, not part of the KAZPATENT fees.
KAZPATENT charges for carrying out the examination, not for the result: neither the law nor the fee schedule provides for a refund if registration is refused. That is why a search before filing is not an extra expense but a way not to lose the examination fee.
Under the standard procedure there are two KAZPATENT payments:
- When filing: for receipt of the application and examination. Proof of payment of the examination is attached to the application (Article 9(3)(1)). Since 2026 this has been a single combined service covering filing, formal examination and substantive examination (KAZPATENT information letter, in Russian).
- After the decision to register: for entry in the register, issue of the certificate and publication. It must be paid within three months of notice of the decision, or the application is deemed withdrawn (Article 12(4)).
KAZPATENT fees for 2026: standard procedure
All figures are from the KAZPATENT trademark fee schedule including 16% VAT, section 5. The 16% VAT rate is set by Article 503(1) of the Tax Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in force since 1 January 2026.

The “total” column is the price of the combined service in the schedule (item 1); because of rounding it may differ by 1 tiyn from the sum of the two columns.

The most common case: an application in 1–3 Nice classes, up to 10 items in each, standard procedure.

Adding up the formal and substantive examination columns for an SME gives KZT 126,209.01, a 1 tiyn difference due to rounding.
SMEs pay 25% less for examination than other legal entities, and individuals pay 30% less. Whether an applicant is a small or medium-sized business depends on its average annual headcount and average annual income (Article 24 of the Entrepreneurial Code).
Expedited procedure
At the applicant’s request, examination is carried out on an expedited basis: the formal examination within ten working days of filing, and the substantive examination within three months of filing (Article 11(1) of the Trademark Law). Under the standard procedure, the substantive examination takes up to seven months, and the whole process up to the certificate usually takes 7–9 months.
The expedited fee is the same for all applicants; the schedule gives no discount for SMEs or individuals.

Extra fees under expedited examination: for each class over three, KZT 93,835.72 (formal) and KZT 129,220.89 (substantive); for each item over ten in a class, KZT 2,500 and KZT 4,000. You can also switch to expedited examination at any stage of the application by paying the difference (fee schedule, item 49).
Watch the deadlines: under expedited substantive examination, additional materials requested by the examiner must be filed within three months of the request, or the application is deemed withdrawn and cannot be reinstated (Article 11(2)).
Extra fee for items over ten
There is no cap of 10 items: the base examination fee covers up to ten goods or services in each class, and each further item is charged extra.

Example. An SME files an application with 15 items in one class. The extra fee for 5 items over ten: 5 × KZT 525 + 5 × KZT 937.50 = 2,625 + 4,687.50 = KZT 7,312.50.
KAZPATENT explains how items are counted in its information letter (in Russian): the reference is the alphabetical list of the Nice Classification. An entry with its own six-digit basic number counts as one item. “Clothing, footwear, headwear” counts as three items; “dairy products with added fruit fillings” as one; “dairy products, namely cottage cheese, sour cream, cheese” as three. A registration is valid for ten years from the filing date and is renewed each time for ten years at the owner’s request filed in the last year of validity (Article 15(1)–(2)). With expedited examination, the budget starts at about KZT 1,035,000: KZT 200,000 for handling and KZT 835,349.64 to KAZPATENT.
What affects the final cost
Number of Nice classes. Each class over three adds an extra fee to both the examination and the certificate.
Number of items per class. From the 11th item on, each one is charged extra.
Standard or expedited procedure. Expedited examination costs about 6.8 times the standard fee for a legal entity and 9 times for an SME. It makes sense when you need the certificate by a specific date: a transaction, a marketplace launch, talks with an investor. Applicant category. SMEs pay 25% less than other legal entities for examination, individuals 30% less. The certificate and expedited examination cost the same for everyone.
What this means for you
Planning a budget? Allow about KZT 326,000 for an SME and about KZT 356,000 for a legal entity under the standard procedure (1–3 classes, up to 10 items in each). With expedited examination, over a million tenge.
Want to save? Draft the list of goods and services precisely, with only what your business needs: each item over ten in a class increases the examination fee.
Choosing between standard and expedited? If there is no hard deadline, choose standard. Expedited costs several times more, and priority is set by the filing date in both cases (Article 10(1)).
Received a refusal on another application? The examination fee will not come back. A mistake in the sign or classes costs the examination already paid, so a search before filing is the cheapest line in the budget compared with the possible loss.

Is the examination fee refunded if registration is refused?
KAZPATENT charges for carrying out the examination, not for the result, and neither the law nor the fee schedule provides for a refund on refusal. That is why it pays to search before filing.
Do I have to pay everything at once?
No. The examination is paid when you file, and registration with issue of the certificate is paid after the decision to register, within three months of the notice, or the application is deemed withdrawn (Article 12(4) of the Trademark Law).
Are there discounts for SMEs?

How does the cost change with more Nice classes?
Each class over three adds an extra examination fee (for an SME, KZT 26,245.65: KZT 11,115.80 for the formal and KZT 15,129.85 for the substantive examination) and KZT 11,185.72 to the certificate fee.
Is VAT included in KAZPATENT fees?
Yes. The KAZPATENT fees from 1 January 2026 are published including VAT at 16%, the rate set by Article 503(1) of the Kazakhstan Tax Code.
